How alerts actually work

1. Your newsletter names a level (for example SMH at $525). GuruWatcher stores that as a watch.
2. While Keep checking is on, it looks up market prices on one timer (default ~5 minutes) and pulls new newsletter email on another (default ~15 minutes). You can edit both in the Control Panel.
3. If that lookup shows the level was reached, and you’re on Live with a Discord alert link saved, Discord gets a message.

It is not a live brokerage stream. Alerts arrive on the next price check after the market has moved through the level — often within a few minutes, not the exact second. Don’t set the timers too low: Yahoo and IMAP will rate-limit aggressive polls.

Off vs on

• Keep checking off — no price lookups, no Discord alerts (even if you already have watches saved).
• Keep checking on + Live — looks up prices on the timer and posts when a check sees a hit. Normal path once Discord is connected.
• Quiet (optional) — same lookups, but doesn’t post to Discord. Most people can ignore this.

Turn it on

1. Open the Control Panel (leave the launcher window open).
2. Save your Discord alert link (and optionally connect email).
3. Scroll to Keep checking.
4. Timers: leave Prices around 300 (~5 min) and Email around 900 (~15 min), or tweak — floors are 60s / 300s.
5. Choose Live → Start checking (confirm once).

While it’s running

• To stop alerts: click Stop checking in the panel, or close the launcher (that also stops background checks).
• Keep the computer awake — asleep or off = no lookups = no alerts.
  • macOS: System Settings → Lock Screen → set “Turn display off on power adapter when inactive” to Never; also System Settings → Battery → Options → turn on Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off. No-terminal alternative: run caffeinate -i in a Terminal and leave it open — the Mac stays awake until you press Ctrl+C.
  • Windows: Settings → Power & battery → Screen and sleep → set Sleep to Never while plugged in.
  • A closed lid still stops checks on most laptops even with these settings. If you want alerts overnight without keeping a machine open, that’s what the optional cheap Hetzner server guide is for.
• Email pulls (if connected) and price lookups run on separate schedules — you don’t need to re-check the mailbox every time prices update.
• Old levels fall off: newsletter watches typically expire after about 14 days unless a newer issue refreshes that symbol (change the days under Keep checking in the Control Panel). A newer claim replaces the older one. Expired watches stop being tracked.
